What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease in which there is an increase in blood sugar level. Most of the food we eat is converted into glucose, or sugar, which is used by our body cells for energy. The pancreas, an oblong flattened gland located deep in the abdomen, produces juices that help break down food, and also hormones to control blood sugar. Pancreas makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. By moving sugar from your blood to your body’s cells, insulin helps keep your blood sugar level normal (not too high, not too low). When you don’t have enough insulin to lower high blood sugar levels, you have diabetes.

Diabetes can lead to serious complications such as eye damage, nerve damage, heart disease, kidney failure etc.
